A great choreographer, Petipa created the best-known classical ballets in the repertoire of the Opéra national de Paris: La Bayadère, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. This 2018 documentary by Denis Sneguirev offers a portrait of Petipa: a man, his art, his era and his legacy. Born in 1818, Marius Petipa, a French dancer exiled to Russia in the middle of the Romantic 19th century, became ballet master at the court of the Tsars. It was there that, for fifty years until his demise in 1903, he gave classical dance its letters of nobility.
