Despite the fact Mats Ek announced a few years ago that he no longer wanted to choreograph, he returned to the stage in 2019 to offer two new works to the dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet: Another Place, a piece in which he explores the interactions of a couple through an enigmatic pas de deux, and Boléro, a free and poetic creation built around an iconic piece from the history of music and dance. His version of Carmen, a reinterpretation of the famous literary figure, is also entering the Company’s repertoire. Together, these three pieces offer us an insight into the choreographic and theatrical world of Mats Ek: a concept of dance built around noble, sweeping gestures that at times harbour a disturbing beauty which renders the inner turmoil of the soul perceptible.
