Created by decree of Louis XIV in 1713, the Paris Opera Ballet School is the oldest and one of the most renowned in the world. Each year, it welcomes around 150 students from all over the world, recruited through a particularly demanding and selective competition, to teach them the style and technique of the French School of Dance, enable them to tackle the vast repertoire of the Opera Ballet, and introduce them to different contemporary languages.

An exceptional institution thanks to its longevity, a succession of remarkable teachers and a long artistic tradition, the École de Danse de l'Opéra has been based in Nanterre since 1987. It has been directed since 2004 by Étoile dancer Élisabeth Platel.

Each season, the public demonstrations and the Dance School's show on the stage of the Palais Garnier are special events during which the public can appreciate the demands of learning to dance. Through this formative stage experience, the students showcase the skills required to master the French school of dance and offer a glimpse of the other arts and choreographic styles they practise, which complement their training: contemporary dance, folklore, mime, character dance, baroque dance and musical expression.
